Description
In 1977, the Centre for Alternative Technology – Europe's leading eco-centre – produced Britain's first Alternative Energy Strategy. Thirty years on, CAT has built a fresh consensus around a pragmatic new energy strategy: zerocarbonbritain. Through a series of consultations the new strategy has been designed to help Britain meet the challenge of climate change within a global context.

Limits to energy growth through efficiency measures, and generation from renewable sources have now become commonplace in British energy policy. However, they have not yet been directly linked to the sheer scale and urgency of the challenges presented by climate & energy scientists.

Nor are Britain's climate change targets fully integrated with the equally urgent requirement for energy security, as global demand for oil and gas outstrips peak production. In addition, the demand for global equity has never been a more pressing moral concern.

zerocarbonbritain provides an integrated solution to the challenges of:
  •  climate change
  •  peak oil
  •  global equity
It takes Britain's current fossil fuel consumption down to zero in 2 decades, and powers up renewable energy to meet the emerging demand. Sector by sector it explores the practical implications of this climate safe future: what transport systems will we be using, what kind of homes will we live in and how will industry, food and other sectors operate?

Dealing with our energy challenges can allow us to create the kind of world we actually want to live in, and deliver real security both locally and globally.
